Biography and Career
Jamaal Bowman is an American politician and former middle school principal who has served as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 16th congressional district since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, he is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Bowman was born in New York City and raised in Yonkers, New York. He graduated from Iona College with a bachelor’s degree in political science and earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Mercy College. Bowman served in the United States Army Reserve for eight years, attaining the rank of captain.
Political Career
Bowman began his political career in 2014 when he was elected to the Yonkers City Council. He served on the council for four years, during which time he focused on issues such as education, affordable housing, and criminal justice reform.
In 2018, Bowman ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in New York’s 16th congressional district. He defeated incumbent Eliot Engel in the Democratic primary and went on to win the general election. Bowman is the first person to defeat an incumbent member of Congress from New York City in over 30 years.
